Still of an AI-generated Val Kilmer from the upcoming film

Academy rule change

Reuters reported that AI‑generated acting and writing will be ineligible for Academy Awards. The new rules from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences take effect with the ceremony scheduled for March 2027.

The Academy states that while filmmakers may use AI tools, “synthetic” performers cannot win awards, and screenplays must be “human‑authored.” Submissions may be asked to provide evidence that the work was created by humans.

AI‑generated Val Kilmer performance

A fully AI‑generated appearance of the late Val Kilmer will appear in the indie film As Deep as the Grave. Kilmer was originally cast but withdrew for medical reasons before his death in April 2025. According to Variety, the AI version will play “a significant part” of the movie.

“His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this,” said writer‑director Coerte Voorhees. “It was that support that gave me the confidence to say, okay let’s do this. Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”

ByteDance AI video generator controversy

A two‑sentence prompt using Seedance 2.0 generated a convincing 15‑second clip of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting on a rooftop. The clip went viral, prompting industry panic and even a response from Washington.

  • Senators urged ByteDance to shut down the tool.
  • ByteDance has reportedly paused the global rollout of the AI video generator while the entertainment sector considers the implications of creating film‑level content from a few typed words.
