Aging and eye problems

June 5, 2026

I found it interesting to come across two posts in my RSS feed about aging and eye problems the other day.

Robert Breen

Eleven years ago, just after my fiftieth birthday, I started having trouble reading late in the day. This is common for people of a certain age, but the reason I was struggling wasn’t normal. Instead of a single row of data on a spreadsheet, I saw two, one below the other. If I closed one eye, everything was fine.

Despite studies I cited back then, I am now making use of dark mode whenever possible because, simply put, the floaters make reading light text on dark backgrounds far less aggravating than is the case with dark text on light backgrounds.

Like Bryce, I’ve also been making use of dark mode. Several months ago I had a posterior vitreous detachment in my left eye, where the gel inside the eye pulls away from the retina, causing floaters and flashes of light. The floaters and flashes have faded over time, but my left eye still gets cloudy, which makes it especially difficult to see when using light mode.
