Release Details
Publisher Feral Interactive announced today that Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will arrive on macOS via Steam on May 28, with an App Store release scheduled for later this year. Feral worked with World’s Edge, the studio that has managed the Age of Empires franchise for Microsoft since 2019, to develop the port.
Content Included
The Mac version mirrors the PC counterpart, featuring:
- The original Age of Empires II: Age of Kings campaign
- The classic The Conquerors expansion
- Recent DLC packs: Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes
Together, these provide hundreds of hours of single‑player content. As a remake, the Definitive Edition also brings updated graphics, remastered music, and roughly two decades of quality‑of‑life improvements.
Multiplayer and Additional DLC
Multiplayer supports all the civilizations available in the game. Every DLC released for the PC version—including the latest The Last Chieftains expansion—will be purchasable separately for the Mac edition.
History and Context
Age of Empires II originally launched on Mac in 2001. This marks the first time the Definitive Edition, originally released on PC in 2019, is available on Apple’s platform. It is also the first Microsoft title to reach macOS since Psychonauts 2 in 2021. Despite the long wait, the community remains active; Steam consistently shows around 20,000 concurrent players, ensuring a steady pool of opponents.
