A Valentine's Day homage to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Plot Overview

Jen, a thief secretly training in martial arts, is reluctant to enter an arranged marriage because she has fallen for the bandit Lo “Dark Cloud” Xiao Hou (Chang Chen). They embody the symbolic tiger and dragon—Lo as the unchanging yin (tiger) and Jen as the dynamic yang (the hidden dragon).

Longtime friends Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) and Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) have suppressed their love out of respect for Shu Lien’s late fiancé.

Betrayal and Tragedy

Jen’s former teacher, Jade Fox, betrays her out of bitterness—Jade Fox is illiterate and relies on a stolen manual’s diagrams, while Jen can read the text but does not share her insights. Jade Fox imprisons Jen in a cave, intending to poison her. Mu Bai and Shu Lien intervene, but Mu Bai is struck by one of Jade Fox’s poison darts.

Jen rushes for the antidote but arrives too late. Mu Bai dies in Shu Lien’s arms, and the two finally confess their love.

Resolution

Shu Lien forgives Jen and urges her to be true to herself, suggesting she join Lo on Mount Wudang. Their story, however, does not end happily. After spending the night together, Lo finds Jen on a bridge at the mountain’s edge. Legend tells of a man whose pure heart allowed him to wish and then fly away unharmed after leaping from the mountain.

Jen asks Lo to make a wish before she dives into the mist‑filled chasm. Whether her heart was pure, whether Lo’s wish was granted, or whether Jen perished remains unknown. She becomes part of the legend.
