9 SaaS pricing traps in India that quietly inflate your bill
Source: Dev.to
Introduction
If you purchase SaaS from India, the price you think you are paying often differs from the final amount after renewals, add‑ons, seat rules, and “fair‑use” limitations. Use this checklist before subscribing to any tool.
Before Paying – Capture Key Details
- Plan name
- Renewal price
- Billing cycle
- Cancellation terms
Take a screenshot of these details for reference.
Seats – “Per User” Pricing Pitfalls
Many plans advertise “$X per seat” but enforce:
- Minimum seat count
- Admin seats billed the same as regular users
- Guest/collaborator limits
Check: How many seats do you really need today and three months from now?
AI Features – Hidden Costs
“AI included” can still mean:
- Capped number of messages
- Extra cost per 1,000 requests
- Separate AI add‑on for each workspace
Check: Is AI priced per user, per workspace, or per request?
Usage Limits – Watch for Throttling and Upsells
Tools may silently throttle or upsell when you hit:
- Executions
- Bandwidth
- Storage
- API calls
- Automation runs
Rule: Always review the “Limits” section before buying.
Additional Services That May Be Excluded
Some plans do not include:
- Priority support
- Onboarding
- Service Level Agreement (SLA)
- Exports / backups
Check: Response time of support and availability of backup/export features.
Currency, Fees, and Taxes
Even if the SaaS price appears fixed, you may pay more because of:
- FX rate conversion
- Bank/processor fees
- GST handling based on invoice setup
Tip: Compare the final charged amount in INR, not just the USD price.
Cancellation & Refund Policies
- Does the tool allow instant cancellation?
- Is there a notice period?
- Is the refund policy clearly linked?
Many tools do not provide refunds for half periods and require cancellation days before renewal.
Annual Plans – Do the Math
Annual discounts look attractive only if:
- You will use the tool for the full 12 months
- Your team size won’t change significantly
- Limits won’t need upgrading mid‑year
Simple test: Would you be comfortable paying the full year’s amount upfront even if you stopped using the tool after three months?
Decision Checklist
- Does a cheaper tool meet ≥ 80 % of your needs?
- Are AI features restricted or charged separately?
- What is the real seat requirement (minimum seats + guests)?
- How does renewal work, and at what price?
- Are data and backups easily exportable?
- What are the cancellation and refund policies?
