At Google I/O, three new features for Google Shopping were announced, aimed at enhancing the AI‑driven shopping experience and adding safeguards for AI agents.
Universal Cart

The Universal Cart aggregates products you add to carts on any retailer—Target, Amazon, etc.—into a single Google cart that you can view across Google platforms, including Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail.
“The moment you add a product, the cart goes to work for you in the background. It can do things like find deals, price drops, give you insights on price history, and can even alert when something comes back in stock. Now, these are all things that we’ve gotten used to doing ourselves, but the cart can just do it in the background,” — Vidhya Srinivasan, VP/CM, Google Ads and Commerce.
The Universal Cart will launch on Google and Gemini in the US this summer, with Gmail and YouTube support to follow.

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) enables AI agents to purchase products, order goods, and reserve hotels on behalf of users. Current UCP partners include eShopify, Amazon, Walmart, Stripe, Salesforce, and Meta. The protocol will soon be available in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Agent Payments Protocol 2 (AP2)
Agent Payments Protocol 2 (AP2) lets users set limits on how much and what an AI agent can purchase, providing an additional layer of control. AP2 also creates a permanent paper trail for returns or order issues, helping to resolve mistakes that may occur.

The new features build on last year’s announcements, such as Google’s “Try it on” feature.
